The Creator’s Dilemma

I’ve been facing a dilemma lately, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

Two potentially conflicting ideas have caught my eye over the past few months: Tara McMullin talking about creating remarkable work and Charli Marie talking about making improvised work.

This sketchnote is my attempt to think through those two different approaches to work, and decide which of them I’d like to pursue:

Here’s what makes remarkable work distinctive:

  • It leads to more clarity of thought.
  • It’s more likely to stand the test of time.
  • You’re more likely to make deeper connections.

And here’s what makes improvised work distinctive:

  • It’s easier to make an authentic connection with the audience (I find it hard to sound natural when reading from a script).
  • It has a higher likelihood of leading to momentum (you won’t get caught up in the “is this good enough yet?” question).

Of course, those two types of work are not mutually exclusive. Improvised work can also be remarkable, but it might be harder to get there.

As I think about the types of videos I’d like to make in the coming months, I plan to experiment with different approaches along the improvised-to-polished spectrum.

Sometimes I’ll go through a few drafts of visuals and record a video of me filling the page from blank to full.

Other times I’ll do some sketchnoting off camera and then turn it on to show and talk through what I captured.

Here’s my question for you: to what degree does not seeing the marks make affect the impact of the videos that I make?
